Meet Dave Chatterton: A Veteran in Building Materials with a Commitment to Quality
Dave Chatterton’s journey in the construction industry began early—working alongside his father, a contractor and carpenter, from a young age. By the early 1990s, Dave was running his own contracting business, honing his skills and deepening his understanding of the trade. His extensive experience led him to Great Northern Insulation (GNI) in 2000, where he transitioned into selling insulation at a supply and install level. Over the years, Dave’s expertise in building science has grown, particularly in energy efficiency and commercial retrofits.
Solving Complex Challenges with a Systems Approach
At GNI, Dave became adept at addressing the challenges that come with balancing energy efficiency and cost. He was heavily involved in the commercial retrofit industry, where he consulted with clients on the best methods to make their buildings “healthy and comfortable” while staying within budget. “It’s important to focus on the building as a system,” Dave explains. “Just adding insulation can do more harm than good if you don’t consider components like air leakage control.” His work with property management firms, particularly in the condominium market, led to significant energy savings for clients. In many cases, the measures he recommended paid for themselves within three to five years, delivering comfort and excellent returns on investment.
Why Hewson Brothers Stands Out
Since joining Hewson Brothers Building Supply, Dave has quickly recognized the company’s unique strengths. “The Hewson Bros benefit is in the quality of the service,” he says. The team takes the time to deliver products directly into each area of the building as per the client’s request, ensuring that everything is done right. “Our crews are hardworking, but they’re also willing to take the time required to do things properly. If a product is accidentally damaged during delivery, they’ll quickly point it out and arrange for credits or replacement as needed. We don’t just ‘hope no one notices and carry on.’”
Building Relationships that Last
In the competitive world of building materials, Dave’s approach to building long-term client relationships is rooted in availability and attentiveness. “It comes down to always trying to be available,” he explains. “Answer the calls as they come in and don’t put people off. Above all, be a good listener, and do your best to steer them in the right direction, regardless of the size of the order.”
Obviously, in today’s market, prices need to be competitive. But quality of service, availability, and customized consultation should always be part of what that supplier is offering. Without those elements, a client could be missing out, regardless of price.
Advice for Selecting the Right Materials
When it comes to choosing the right supplier, Dave emphasizes that it should be about more than just price. “Obviously, in today’s market, prices need to be competitive. But quality of service, availability, and customized consultation should always be part of what that supplier is offering. Without those elements, a client could be missing out, regardless of price.”
